Mission Photographs 1903-1960; 1935-1955.

This series comprises photographs taken of the United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA) mission field in India from 1903-1960 with the majority of photographs being taken from 1935-1955. There are 6 photo albums containing a total of approximately 380 black and white and sepia-toned photographs. The majority of the albums contain photographs depicting various stages of construction of mission buildings. The album from Mr. and Mrs. Abdel R. Wentz's trip to the India mission field contains detailed explanations of different aspects of the church's work in India and provides a concise, anecdotal overview of ULCA mission work in India. In addition to the albums containing photographs, there are 3 boxes containing approximately 465 loose black and white photographs. The subject matter depicted in these images include, among others, churches, congregations, missionaries and pastors, conventions of the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church, medical clinics and workers, and educational institutions. Many of these photographs were obtained from the various news services, such as the Religious News Service and the National Lutheran Council News Bureau, that the ULCA utilized in acquiring photographs for publication in either The Lutheran or The Foreign Missionary. There are also images that were generated by the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
